A friend is having a problem with his Yamaha DX7s. Loading patches
(sounds) into his DX7s just doesn't seem to work correctly.

Using various loader programs (they all have the same result), he
loaded the patches into the 2nd bank of voices on the DX7s (33 -
64).

Though the LCD showed loading was successful, and all the voice names
showed up in the LCD (though some had unusual characters, such as
negative "f" (ie, a black background, with a white letter "f"),
certain voices would be out of tune, others would not play at all,
others would pitch up or pitch down when played ( especially when
adding pressure to the key). None sound correct.

Any suggestions as to what is wrong, and a solution?

Thanks in advance.

It would appear that the source data is corrupted.

Some ideas:

Could the source data be corrupted because these are not pure sysex
dumps? Some programs receive sysex dumps and then save them to disk but
add a bit of extra header information to the start of the file for the
program's own use.

Some programs even compress the data before saving. Are all of the dumps
exactly the same size? If not this could indicate that the data is
compressed.

Some older synths can't receive sysex dumps at full speed. There might
be an option in your sysex util to slow down the dump.

To test the the synth + your computer setup - try saving the DX7s memory
via your software, alter something on the synth and then try loading it
back in. If this works, try getting some more patches but from a
different source.
