Sound Card Crackling and Screeching?

I have an HP Pavilion 8565c and periodically the sound on the computer
stops working. Instead all that comes out of the speakers is a
crackling, screeching noise which happens until I stop whatever media
is playing on the computer and restart it. It happens in all programs
at seemingly random times. The problem seems to be worse when the
computer had been awoken from standby. Does any one have any idea what
this could be?

I may provide some help, but I need some more specific information.
Can you specify your hardware configuration, like memory amount,
processor, software used and if you use an external soundcard (usb,
firewire ...). It may be an ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power
Interface) configuration problem.
