PCM encoded VHS tapes

Hello all.

I have a bunch (~100) VHS tapes that I am pretty sure have PCM encoded audio on them. When I play them on a VCR I see what looks like digital data. Does anybody know how to get this data in to a PC WAV file format so that I can then edit, restore, and then burn to CD? In doing a little research I've found references to a Sony "PCM-601ESD" unit that might be what I need. Does anybody have one of these they are willing to sell or rent?

Any help on this would be great.

It might be a DAT tape. Some of the Digital Audio recorders did make use of
vcr tapes to record their audio.

You just might have something quite valuable, so save it aside until you can
find someone with a dat to play it.

If thats an old movie original dat sound track, or a pop song that made it big,
you would have a valuable collector item.

If you're still looking for a Sony PCM-601ESD, I got one for sale in very
good condition but no manual. I ask $85.00 plus shipping. Let me know.
